Amaia Urra (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1974) is a Fine Arts graduate, specialising in sculpture, from the University of the Basque Country (EHU), her two mother tongues – Spanish and French – enabled her, whilst still a student, to get involved and participate as an assistant in experimental theatre productions organised by the French Institute in Bilbao. This experience sparked her interest in conceptual performance art, which she began to develop within the Mugatxoan programme at Arteleku. From there, she began to create her own pieces, while also taking part in the creation and presentation of works by artists such as Jérôme Bel, Xavier Le Roy, Ion Munduate, Cuqui Jerez and María Jerez, amongst others. In 2012, she moves away from stage practices and begins to develop her own working methodology, combining voice, text and the body. Between 2017 and 2018, she directs, alongside Sandra Cuesta and Larraitz Torres, the Alkolea Beach venue in Donostia-San Sebastián. Her work has been presented in artistic venues such as Artium Museoa, MNCARS, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bulegoa z/b, La Casa Encendida and Tabakalera, and has also been shown internationally at venues and festivals across Europe and the Americas, including Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Art Nomade and the 45th National Salon of Artists in Bogotá. Atoi is her first solo exhibition.
